Each year the American Society of Mammalogists recognizes the research accomplishments of its graduate and undergraduate student members with several prestigious Honoraria Awards. ASM also offers Travel Awards to students and early career professionals to help with expenses related to attending the Annual Meeting. For further information about ASM Grants & Travel Awards, the application submission process, and due dates see the ASM website.
HONORARIA
In 2022, ASM will award up to four graduate student honoraria ($2000 each) and up to two undergraduate honoraria ($1500 each). Graduate honoraria are awarded to both doctoral and master’s students. Applications will be accepted from 15 January to 15 February 2022, with awards announced in early March. Application materials should reflect the research that the student will present in their presentation at the Annual Meeting. Letters of recommendation must address whether the student is prepared to present their research in the Student Plenary Session and the student’s role in designing and conducting the research. For more information on ASM Student Honoraria and the application process, please see the ASM website.
TRAVEL AWARDS
Students and early career professionals (within 5 years of terminal degree) interested in applying for a travel award to attend the 2022 Annual Meeting will be able to do so soon by submitting an abstract for consideration to a submission portal using the following link: https://purdue.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0TgX2f3nTC5qojs . The application process allows students and early career members to apply for a travel award without first having to register for the meeting. Abstracts must be submitted to the Travel Award website by 11:59 PM EST on 15 March 2022 to be considered for one of the travel awards, with review beginning on 16 March, and no late submissions will be accepted. Abstracts submitted for consideration for a Travel Award must follow the formatting requirements for the conference found on the conference website (https://mammalmeetings.org/abstracts/) with the exception to exclude names and affiliations on the Word doc you upload – we use a double-blind process for reviewing Travel Awards.
Please be aware that you will also need to submit your full abstract (with author names and affiliations) and register for the meetings as a separately process using the meeting website. Recipients of 2022 Travel Awards will be notified by 1 April 2022. For more information about ASM Travel Awards and the application process, please see the ASM website.
CARE ASSISTANCE TRAVEL AWARD
This year we also are offering the Care Assistance Travel Award. This award is intended to provide financial support for active ASM members whose responsibilities for care of dependents, or need for assistance themselves, would limit their ability to attend and present at the Annual Meeting. Receiving this award does not preclude current ASM members from applying to and receiving additional travel support from ASM. Funds from this award must be used to support dependent or personal care rather than general conference attendance costs, like registration or travel, for the applicant. Examples of uses for these funds include expenses related to childcare or eldercare either at home or at the conference, hiring a temporary care giver, and travel/host costs associated with bringing your dependent, a caregiver, or a helper to the conference. Applications will be evaluated by a small internal committee and names of applicants will be omitted from the review process. Applicants will be asked to upload a Word doc with an overview of their goals for attending the conference, and either (or both) an abstract for an oral or poster presentation that will be given at the conference or a description of their goals and/or reasons for attending the conference (e.g. networking, to attend a workshop, etc. instead of presenting). For both, applicants should omit including their name or institution on the Word doc. Applications for the Care Assistance Travel Award are accepted through an online portal specific to these awards: https://purdue.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6Rb5WIf2rQ4j20C
Complete applications must be submitted before 11:59 PM EST on 15 March 2022 to be considered for this award. Applicants also will need to submit registration along with their abstract to the conference registration site. For more information about ASM Travel Awards and the application process, please see the ASM website.
